Never had one, but get hold of the Lyman Black Powder Handbook. Lots of good information there, including loads/bullet weights for about every caliber you can want. The Bess should have a manual with it. Download the suggested loads here:

Then remember that each gun is an entity to itself so suggested loads are just a starting point. Then the fun begins with developing the load(s) it really likes.
