3 Powder Measures - 3 results
Seeing bucks post on the powder measured, I was bored last night and decided to see what was the most accurate out of the box without fiddling around.
All powder measures were heaped over with powder and then "cut" with the flat part of my finger. The measure with the funnel, automatically cuts the charge as you close it.
Next test, I tapped the measured to settle the powder and then topped them off and cut them level with my finger again.
Funnel powder measure,
Next I used my regular hunting powder measure which is small and low profile.
Now tapping on the measures to settle the powder, top it off then level it off.
Low profile powder measure
Overall, they are all well within acceptable measurements. The funnel powder measure however has a set back due to the funnel. With A chunkier powder like Alliant Black MZ, the powder gets choked off and when you think its empty, you pull it out of the bore and then it starts flowing again, spilling powder all over the place. Shooter must spend a little extra time shaking and tapping this powder measure to ensure that it is empty before pulling it out of the muzzle.
I personally like the open top, click style increment, powder measure the best on the range and for hunting.

Once I work up a load for my guns I make a powder measure for that gun out of an antler tine and use that measure for all shooting with that particular gun.

I agree no set measure increments, some weigh. I have had 1 measure from the start, that is the only one I use. Had a great beginning when I purchased supplies and equipment EF Hutton told me 1 type/style of powder measure. Like Pants and shoes many makers with size differences. Stick to one get 2 of the same for when the first one goes. The second will be same.

Thank you Jonathan for your time in doing this, find it interesting kid. I usually work up a load with an adjustable measure then make a horn measurer for that measurement. That deer horn measure will stay with the rifle, even if the gun is sold it will go to the new owner.

Once I work up a load (volume) I too make a dedicated measure for that amount. Later, if I'm interested, I'll weigh the powder charge; weight though is irrelevant when using volume. I've used antler, rivercane, wood, brass cartridge cases with great success. I must have near a couple dozen fixed measures that I made plus several other fixed, or semi fixed, that I've bought or simply come across over the years. By "semi fixed" I'm referring to the open brass tube ones that can be made longer or shorter by pushing and pulling the knob at the bottom.
Here's a few I've made and use a lot.
