Testing Traveler's Schuetzen Black Powder Part 1
It was a nice day to do some testing, so I took out some re-branded, Traveler's Antiques & trading, Schuetzen 2fg black powder.
I decided to keep the target at 50 yards for its first test.
Shooting my Traditions St.Louis Hawken .54cal with 1:48 twist, I loaded 80gr 2fg Schuetzen 2fg, .020" patch * spit lubed * and proceeded to take a 5 shot group.
All .530" round balls weighed between 224.2 - 224.8 grains.
On shot #3, the gun had a weird, LUMP, sound instead of the sharp crack that I normally get. This shot impacted way low, spoiling what would have been an awesome group.
Fouling seems to be a little thicker than my Gearhart-Owen or even Goex.
All recovered patches looked excellent, no holes, burn scar, just a good clean recovered patch that any shooter would look forward to finding.
On my next test. I will try it from 100 yards to see what kind of group I get with the 80gr charge, swabbing between shots. If its not that great, I will try 70gr and see how it does.
Overall, it'll kill big game all day long, and do pretty darn good on paper targets. With more load development, I feel this powder could easily match my Gearhard-Owen powder as far as accuracy goes.
