Bought a .58 CVA Mtn Rifle
Bought this rifle from an online auction last week, and got to pick it up today.
Not bad shape, has a little wear and tear. As soon as I picked it up, I looked at the muzzle, it had been fired and put away dirty, but I didn’t see any rust near the muzzle.
Once I got home, I got out my cleaning supplies and swabbed the bore. Not having a .58 cleaning jag, I discovered my .50 worked great with two patches.
The 1st double patch was just water, followed by a 2nd of water, not a lot of filth, so must of been just one shot residue. The next two doubles were dry, the next was Windex, followed by two sets of wet, followed by two sets of dry. Patches were as clean as any I’ve ever seen. Last thing was a patch wet with Ballitol.
My bore light no longer works so an LED penlight shown down the bore told me everything is good. I suspected as much since the cleaning patches didn’t catch on any rough spots.
I’m satisfied with my $325 purchase. Now I gotta get some balls and a proper jag and a trip to the range.

Nevermind the question, I found what I needed to know.
Just the man that I need to answer a question.
Is the RB for this rifle a .562 ?

Not only backwards, there is about a dozen notches cut into it.

That's usually done to cut down glare. Wouldn't need it if the sight was installed correctly. On the other hand, I think it actually decorates it nicely.

I think I’ll leave it alone for the time being. Once I get my mold and some nice weather I want to try it out.
I found a Lee .562 double at Jedediah Starr.

I agree Jonathan, that's a nice decoration that use to be common and not seen much anymore. Just turn the front sight around and your ready to burn some powder bud.
I'm looking now throughtmy old Buckskin Reports as I recall Richard House did the same thing on his rifle and wrote about putting the file marks on his front sight to make it fancy (just like this [installed backwards] - he got a stack of letters telling him the sight was backwards). In 1980 we got on his butt about several things that he wrote about when at the Nationals in La Veta, CO that year, can't remember if this was one of them or not.

Well, even if that sight is "backerds" (Southern for "backwards") you're correct in not fooling with it unless it becomes problematic. I like that rifle and caliber combo.

Either way you look at it, it will be the 1st sight on a ML that I didn’t have to file down to sight it in.

From what I've seen lately, you stole that gun! Especially in .58 caliber. You are all set to go up North & hunt grizzlies~

I was beginning to worry. The guy (or) gal, that did most of the bidding for it, wanted it pretty badly.Winter Hawk wrote:From what I've seen lately, you stole that gun! Especially in .58 caliber.
It went back and forth for quite a while, and I thought, “enough of this”, set my maximum bid to $325, then the next day, upped it to $350.
The other person gave up at $315.

Good deal, I always get nervous when the price keeps changing.

Good purchase. It may be a real shooter too.

I bid on a few more that I didn’t get.
Dixie Tennessee Mtn rifle .50 left flint
T/C .54 cap
Euro Arms Cape Gun, 12ga
CVA .45 flint. This was one I thought was gonna be cheap, I wanted it because I don’t have a .45 rifle and I was going to use the lock on the .58.
There are a couple of other T/Cs I bid on but wasn’t really interested unless I got them cheap.

Re: Bought a .58 CVA Mtn Rifle
I ordered a .562 mold from Jedediah Starr on 11/20, they shipped on 11/23 and I got it 11/26. That was good considering it was the day after Thanksgiving.
I took some time to cast some balls before it got dark today. I cast 54, two of which were not complete. I have 52 balls, now I need to get to the range.

It should shoot your cast ball very well. Eons ago when I still had a .58 I, too, got a Lyman mold in .562". I liked it better than the various minies.
